The Wild Robot

🤖 I was surprised a story about a robot could be so endearing and have such unexpected layers of:

  • How do you respond to someone new?
  • How does learning about someone that looks different than you, turn fearing and fighting them into ➡️ appreciating and even welcoming them?
  • Adoption – What makes a family?
  • What difference does reaching out calmly with kindness and curiosity make to those who misunderstand you?
  • How can Empathy lead to ➡️ Understanding?
  • Forgiveness
  • How do our actions affect the animals and earth we all share?

The Book:

The Wild Robot Written and Illustrated by Peter Brown, Published by Little Brown and Co.

  • Reading level – 2nd-5th grade/ages 7-11

📖🛌 Short chapters made this a great read aloud for my 10 year old son at bed time.

More Roz and her son Brightbill:

If you love The Wild Robot you can continue the series and find out what happens to Roz with The Wild Robot Escapes, and the final book The Wild Robot Protects by Peter Brown. Each story is a captivating seemingly simple story, yet with thought provoking deeper layers (my favorite kind;)

Bookmatch:

Want to continue talking about the brilliance and delicate balance of each animal in the ecosystem? What can we do to care for and protect animals and our earth?

🦾Fun Story Extension:

Pair The Wild Robot with this fun wind-up robot making kit “Build the Robot” by Silver Dolphin Books, or ask your library about hands-on robotic/science kits you can check out for budding scientists to build.

The Story is the Doorway:

To Build your relationshipLean into the story and learn about your child or share something with them about yourself.

Ask or share:

  • When has kindness surprised you? Or led to an unexpected friendship?
  • What did you first think about the Wild Robot? Were you scared of her? Why? Did that change? What were the animals’ reactions to her? Did that change and why?
  • What is your Favorite Animal?
  • Talk about adoption with Roz and her son Brightbill’s relationship…What makes a family?
  • What was your favorite part of the story?
